“Hey! Where are you lost? Forget Vicky. I’m sure he’ll not trouble you again” Natasha looked at her searchingly.
Priti looked at the bunch of roses that lay in front of her on the table. Quizzed, she looked around at her friends. Amit showed her the way with his thumb. She looked to her left and found a guy on his knees with a cut out of a heart he held in his hand, his eyes pleading, nay, begging of her to accept him.
She looked at sky and said “Oh! No! Not again” put on her best possible smile and looked at the boy and said, “Sorry. Wrong number” and burst out laughing her natural best that echoed across every heart in the canteen that was yet single. “I’m sorry I cannot accept this please keep it for the right one”
She got up along with everyone as they all parted ways to their respective departments.
“Payal” she asked, “do we have only morons like this one or rowdies like Vicky studying in this campus? I haven’t seen any guy of a strong character around…”
“Careful” Payal retorted.
“Of course… Chaps can be exempted but he’s engaged to you and out of question” she added hastily and both laughed heartily.
“Tell me something Priti” Payal wondered, “Are you engaged?”
“Me? Hell, no.” said Priti with a twinkle in her eyes.
“You are so attractive; almost every boy who sees you flips over you. Every day at least one guy approaches you. And you say you’re still single… something’s wrong.”
“C’mon Payal, nothing’s wrong with me. It’s only that I didn’t meet Mr Right”
“Have you at least been on a date, been in someone’s arms and melted at his sweet words? Have you kissed someone? Ever been in an affair with someone? Been someone’s girlfriend?”
“That’s too many questions to answer at a time” said Priti, “Yes I’ve seem to have been someone’s girlfriend, I’ve kissed him – it was a very short affair for only a month. As for a date; it won’t be with someone who chooses me as his date – it will be with someone I choose.”
“Now that’s what I call Attitude, girl…” said Payal, “No wonder you’re still single. What happened to your boyfriend?”
“Nothing… He wanted to be physical and I was not comfortable”
“Hmmm! I understand” said Payal and off they went to attend their lectures.
Two more days passed and everything was as it always seemed to be. No more trouble, though Vicky and his friends used to hungrily stare at Priti…
They were sitting in the canteen and the routine fun was on. Priti was looking out of the window facing Computer Dept.
“Excuse me, guys,” Priti interrupted Amit who was fast approaching the climax of some silly scene he was describing, everyone turned to Priti, “Guys! Don’t we have a speed limit of 30 kmph within the campus?”
“Yes. So what about it?” asked Amit impatiently; he wanted to get on with his story.
“I just saw someone speeding about 100kmph take a nasty U-turn and go back” said Priti
“Nonsense” said Natasha, “No one, I repeat NO ONE is allowed to do so… except one…” and she stopped in the midst of her sentence.
“Who?” Priti asked curiously.
“My God… Chaits!” said Payal excited
“Guys… Pack up! Follow me” said Chaps even before Priti could realise the group was on its feet, out of the canteen, sprinting toward Computer dept. Priti left with no other choice followed them. Even as they sprinted across the lawn, the bike came in at a hazardous speed took a screeching sharp left turn and sped into the parking of Computer dept.
Priti reached huffing and puffing with the group, the bike rider pulled the bike on its stand and got the helmet off.
“Hi! Guys! I’m back” he screamed in joy and the joy of meeting his friends showed genuinely on his face. There was a round of hugs and back pats.
Priti looked at him. One couldn’t exactly call him Brad Pitt or handsome but he had a neat good looking face that looked honest. He had an athletic build and was tall. His sense of dressing was a bit odd but he carried it in his own style.
Priti’s analysis was cut short when he approached her, “Hi! Pinky!”
“Pinky?” asked everyone.
“She’s Pinky, the new girl in our group, right?”
“I’m Priti” Priti said firmly
“Oh! I’m sorry” said Chaits, “I read lots of emails and received photos of all fun moments you had. I obviously missed those moments. But no one put your name and since almost all photos I saw you wearing something or other in pink – I thought your name could be Pinky.”
“Sorry, my mistake” said Amit and everyone echoed
“Well to make up” said Chaps, “Let formally introduce Ms Priti… our new group member, and Priti meet Chaits the person who is the founder member of this group and the best friend of all us…”
“Hi” said Priti and smiled at Chaits… She was a little uncomfortable. From the first time since she experienced on the annual day at school, here’s someone whose jaw did not drop, she could not see his mouth wide open nor could she hear his heart beat… and that was not what she was accustomed to…
“C’mon Guys… I’ll like to have a cup of hot tea, join me” said Chaits and they all walked toward the canteen.
They settled down on one of the tables and Lucky appeared “Chaits! My friend… How the hell is you?” he said beaming all across his face.
Chaits got up and greeted him with a hug and a back pat.
“I’ll like to share a cup of tea along with you” he said and grabbed a chair He pushed it between Chaits and Priti, more closer to Priti than Chaits making her feel a bit uncomfortable.
Soon Vicky and his friends arrived and greeted Chaits and went off to find a table for the rest of day nothing much happened except, it seemed the entire campus wanted to meet Chaits and greet him…
