“That’s good, you carry on with your work while I go to the bazaar and check for few things I need. From there, I’ll carry on as per our plan and if you finish early, do join me.”
“It may be a bit difficult today, however, I’ll try.”
Sajjan walked out of the main door and glanced at the outhouse. He was now accustomed to see Leela watch him go out to work – her eyes bidding him bye – have a nice day sort – and do return soon. The main door of the outhouse was firmly shut. There was no Leela standing there. ‘She must have gone out to Amar’s fields as usual.’ he thought and started walking toward the bazaar.
He inquired at few shops about the equipment he needed for completion his project & his mission. He was pleased as the shopkeepers immediately called their suppliers and confirmed him delivery in about few days. While sipping at his tea in the same restaurant he visited earlier, he chatted with the stall owner. He wanted information on the people who engineered and spread the hate amongst simple common people of the region. The hate and animosity was so deep that Amar had denied accompanying him to visit few locations. This was a concern.
He bought a chocolate for little Leela and proceeded toward her school. He wanted a couple of more maps to work upon. The principal was cooperative and gave him access to every paper he wanted to check. He made the copies of what he wanted and thanked the principal.
He looked at the children playing in the school campus garden. It seemed like a break time for them before the second session began. Little Leela saw him and came running and hugged him excitement. He smiled and gave her the bar of chocolate and she beamed happily.
“Today is a lucky day for me.” she said happily.
“Why?”
“This is the 3rd chocolate bar I got since the morning.” she couldn’t stop being happy about it.
“Oh! Wow!” Sajjan said in an excited tone, “I gave you one. Did your teachers give you those chocolate bars as an appreciation for your studies and good behaviour?”
She wrinkled her tiny nose in disgust and looked at Sajjan, “No. All teachers here think that I’m the most mischievous girl in the school. One uncle gave them to me.”
“And who is that uncle?”
“Arrey – he is the uncle who came to our home today morning. He always gives me one chocolate bar every day. I don’t get the chocolate on Sunday. Sunday – the school is closed.”
“You said two chocolates.”
“He always gets one for me and he gets one for my best friend Reshma. We are always together in school.”
“Then I should say sorry to your best friend. I didn’t know you both are always together. By the way, where is she?”
She had a sad look, “She hasn’t come to school today. She won’t be coming to school for a couple of more days. Her mother took her to her aunt’s place, to a distant town.”
“Oh! Then you must be missing her.”
“Yes – I do miss her. School is such fun when she’s here.” she heard the bell ring, “That uncle had got two chocolates, one for me and one for her. Since she hasn’t come to school, he gave both to me.”
“Well – you really are a lucky girl.”
“Okay – bye – have to get into my class, else, that witch teacher will punish me for being late. Why do you work so much? I don’t get time to play with you.” she trotted away to her classroom while Sajjan smiled at her innocence. He distantly remembered something from his past and his eyes grew moist…
