Title: Ivanhoe
Author: Sir Walter Scott
This story is based during medieval times of crusades with famous characters like King Richard the Lion Heart and Robin hood… This story also talks about the sects in the society (Saxons and Normans) and the internal battle of supremacy between them…
Ivanhoe is the son of Cedric the Saxon who has been banished for falling in love with Rowena and unknown to Cedric, has returned to his castle after participating in a crusade led by King Richard and fighting by his side. He is by far the bravest of the knights.
The story then talks about his adventures and how he wins a tournament but is wounded and is taken by Isaac of York – a contemporary Jew character which seems to be drawn from Merchant of Venice by Shakespeare. His beautiful daughter (Rebecca) tends to Ivanhoe, also is in love with him. But all including Ivanhoe are abducted by Knight Templar (The villain of the story) and is rescued by King Richard and Robin Hood in a daring attack on the Castle of Torquilstone. The battle is vividly described and holds attention when you read it.
Apart from natural characters like King Richard and Robin Hood, we liked the characters of Cedric the Saxon, Wamba the fool and Gurth the shepherd. As far as the romantic angle is concerned we liked the portrayal of Rebecca who seems to have some courage in her spine…
How this story ends … obviously Rowena marries Ivanhoe and what happens to Rebecca?
