“Why do you say so?” Chaits asked her – confused.
“Honestly, Chaits… had I known the facts before, I would never have allowed a single meeting between you and Anjali. I seriously want you to reconsider your decision of marrying her…” her tone was now sadder.
“Tanvi – if this is a prank – please stop it…”
“I wish – I was pulling your leg this time. But, I’m serious and really concerned for you…” she patted him gently and continued, “She looks and behaves okay for most of the time. But, the moment she enters her room – she starts acting weird. At first, I thought she was trying to pull a fast one on me. However, when I persisted, I found that she wasn’t putting on any act. She genuinely was acting weird…”
“I don’t understand.” he managed to mumble out.
“Well… She keeps talking to someone imaginary. Behaves as if that person is around in that room doing various things to make her smile, keeps her company all day and night long. I found it creepy…”
Chaits and Guru looked at her in disbelief and she realized that neither of them wanted to believe what she was trying to say. They still had the feeling that she was trying to pull a fast one on Chaits. She got up and pulled a chair and sat facing both of them…
“Anjali and me – we studied in the same school, same classroom – the entire schooling. After school, she joined the college you were studying. My dad got a transfer in his job location and we moved here to Mumbai and I joined a college here. Though shy, she was a normal girl as far as I remember. It seems she met with an accident toward the end of her first year in the college. What I understand is she had few bruises here and there but had a hard hit on her head. She was in coma for about a week. She was okay till the time she was recovering at the hospital. The problem started when they brought her back home. That’s when the trouble of her acting weird started. My uncle tried his best to get a cure for her state of mind and finally gave up… Someone suggested to them that she could get cured once she gets married – once the marital life starts – these problems would get resolved automatically – which I doubt. Wait… let me remember – she introduced me to that imaginary guy – umm – Yes! I remember – his name is Sunny…”
At the mention of Sunny – both, Guru and Chaits jumped out of their respective seats and looked at each other – both had exact same expressions on them – SUNNY ??
“Like Dad – Like Son…” she said musingly, “Why do I always get this feeling that you both are hiding something from me?”
“Sunny…” They both exclaimed in unison even as Tanvi looked at them bewildered.
“Sunny was a character in our college who studied in the same class as Anjali…” Guru started explaining “he was that typical teenager who was confused with the “YO” trend during those days. He sported long hair that almost touched his shoulders and it really didn’t match his ultra-thin body or his boyish looks. He thought he was cool and tried impressing Anjali that he was her perfect soul mate. He always was with her – like her shadow. I could feel that she was in love with Chaits and yet, I was confused with her being with that chap or why she let him entertain her…”
“I didn’t know this.” she wondered.
“I think he exactly was the reason why Chaits couldn’t gather confidence of approaching her during the college days. He believed that Anjali was into him.” Guru said pointing at Chaits who nodded affirmative. His mind was still troubled at the mention of Sunny.
He started going over each and every moment he had spent with Anjali since the time Tanvi got her at Rustomjee’s… He couldn’t find anything wrong with her behaviour. She didn’t seem weird – even remotely. She had been his girlfriend and his fiancée – right from the moment she had accepted his proposal. Why she had confessed to have fallen for him – right from the moment she had seen him at the college campus.
She had left nothing for him to doubt her, the way Tanvi had described her weirdness. Yes! She was shy and had trouble speaking her mind out – but never had flinched away from loving him back – even for a moment. Yet – the mention of Sunny, that too, from Tanvi who had never met him, was confusing…
He played back every moment with Anjali over and over again for any clue or a hint. No way – he had any reason to doubt her sincerity and she never had mentioned a word about Sunny at any point of time…
“I think – something’s wrong or not in place,” he finally said, “I recollect every moment we spent together and she hasn’t given me any chance to doubt what Tanvi says. She never has behaved ‘weird’ the way it was described. So – I am finding it a bit difficult to digest whatever I have heard about her now.”
“I understand dear” Tanvi said softly, “It was difficult for me to comprehend howsoever she behaved and I now feel sorry that I put your life into trouble. I should have investigated her and her background and her life after school – I would have nipped this situation at the bud…” a tear rolled down her cheek from the remorse of what was now happening. She cared for Chaits and knew how deeply he was involved in Anjali – and Anjali – she was her first cousin – her sister…
