Major Chaitanya was posted on the north western border of the country in the hills and snow clad mountains of the Himalayas. He was popular for his innovative weapons he devised from simple equipment. He along with his company was testing a drone modified by him for surveillance. He was near a difficult patch in the snow clad mountain which was notorious for terrorists’ infiltration into the border of the country. He had fitted the drone replacing the regular LEDs with infrared LEDs which were not visible to normal eyes and had fitted it with a special night vision camera.

He was testing the equipment efficiency when he saw a band of terrorists on the night vision camera trying to make their way toward their camp. They already had infiltrated into the nation’s territory. They were getting ready for a surprise attack on their camp. He had about 5 men along with him. He quickly got into action and circumvented their path. The terrorists were surprised at the sudden attack led by him and soon one by one started succumbing to the attack, getting eliminated. One of the terrorists saw his chance and tried to escape. Major Chaitanya leapt on him like a hungry tiger in a bid to stop him. Then onward, it was struggle between them to gain an upper hand and eliminate the other. In their struggle, they slid downhill on the slippery snow at a fearful speed. Finally, Major Chaitanya got his chance and drove his dagger into the heart of the terrorist – right up to its hilt. It was then that he realized the speed at which they were sliding downhill. He saw a tree bang in their path and he managed to hold the body of the dead terrorist ahead of him as a shock absorber. They banged into the tree which arrested their slide.

He stood up – a bit shaken by the impact and brushed away the snow stained by the blood away. He realized that in the melee that ensued, he had slid down, right across the border, behind the lines of the enemy. He wanted to make his way back to his camp across the border but was immediately surrounded by the hostile enemy forces who had watched him slide into their territory. His men on the other side of the border could do nothing except watch him getting captured. They didn’t have orders to cross the border and help him.

The enemy force frisked him of every weapon he carried and marched him to their nearest base. They got orders from their ZHQ to get him to the ZHQ for further interrogation. He knew that their ZHQ was deep inside the border about 75kms away and once he reached their ZHQ there would be no chance of any escape. They tied his hands behind him and put him on an open truck. It was the only vehicle available to them at the moment. Few guards climbed in behind him and kept a vigilant watch on him. He looked around the dark snow filled mountainous region as the vehicle started making its way to the interiors and their ZHQ. The enemy guards jeered and poked at him for a reaction.

The roads were rough and potholes around made people in the truck uncomfortable. He saw that they were approaching a long narrow bridge on a river. He made a sudden move even as the vehicle jumped over a dirty pothole, he pulled his hands as far back as he could and swayed his feet over the tied up hands. This brought his hands in front of him giving him an advantageous freedom of movement. Just as the truck approached the edge of the bridge, the truck jumped into a dirty pothole. He attacked a couple of guards sitting next to him stunning them with the speed of his attack. He kicked the guards in front of him viciously to render them motionless for few moments. In the confusion that followed, he jumped over the bridge from the truck into the dark river which flowed below it. He hoped that the river at that point was deep enough to take his impact. The bridge stood almost 50ft high. Fortunately the river at that point was deep enough and he wasn’t hurt by hitting any hidden rock below the surface. He grabbed at a chain tied to the pillars of the bridge to stop being carried away by the force of the current. The hat he had on his head however flowed off with the current.

The vehicle over the bridge stopped and the guards jumped out on the bridge. They put on bright flash lights and started scanning the running river. They saw his hat floating on the river and started to fire in that direction thinking, he was trying to swim away from them. After firing heavily for couple of minutes they decided that he must be dead. They reported this mishap to their ZHQ who ordered them to carry out a search for his dead body. They hastily drove the truck over the bridge over the other side near the stream where they had sighted his hat, the running stream taking them further away from him…

He carefully climbed up the edge of the bridge pillar and crossed the river. He started crisscrossing his path back to the border and his camp. He knew, soon they will realize, they had been following his hat and launch a massive manhunt for him. He had to get across the border before it dawned. He managed to dodge few enemy units and reach the border from where he had slid own. Looking at a chance he quickly crossed over and started making his way to his camp…

As he neared… he heard voices of his men in discussion…

“It’s good that he slid over the border and has been captured by the enemy”

“GOD, give him strength to endure the torture they would inflict on him.”

“I’d rather him die than endure that torture. At least, he would die happily knowing that he gave up his life for his country.”

“I agree with you and I wish that he dies…. Just think about what his reaction would be, if he escapes and returns to our camp. He will feel bad when he comes to know what happened in the town he lives.”

“I wish we get orders to travel to that city and kill those bastards.”

Major Chaitanya stopped in his track to hear a bit more about what they were discussing…

“I really feel bad for him. He fought here brilliantly in order to keep those terrorists away so that they wouldn’t attack and kill innocent people in the country. And there… at his hometown, some bastard of a politician fuelled up hate and engineered a riot. His only family, his wife and his little daughter were burnt alive in those riots.”
