“Get her along – don’t forget to be silent and discreet. Make sure that she makes no noise on her way here.”
Sajjan discreetly returned to the main road and took a bus to Bhama. He returned around dusk to find Leela was awaiting his return.
“Why are you so silent?” she asked him, unable to bear his silence any longer, “I have told you the truth and am not hiding anything from you.”
“Did you come along with me – only for revenge? You could have used anyone else for that matter. Why are you putting my reputation and my mission at risk for your personal revenge? I have been good to you.”
“Please believe me,” she said, tears in her eyes, “My safety was my only concern. In fact, when you told me that you are going to stay at Dheemapur and wanted me to stay with you till I was safe – I was reluctant. I was afraid that they will find me here. Birju almost did – the day when we first visited the bazaar together. I was hiding from Birju and you thought I was lost – then again when he visited Amarbhai the other day…”
“Why did you kill them?”
“I didn’t want to. I saw someone grabbing little Leela and running into the field. I had the lathi in my hand and I ran behind that guy to save her. I didn’t know how many they were … I searched wildly trying to move in the direction wherever I heard sounds. Then I heard her scream out and I knew where they were hiding. I didn’t look at them when I attacked them. They recognized me before I did and they attacked me with the lathis they carried. I was more concerned about little Leela getting hurt. One of their blows almost hit her and that made me angry and I attacked them with more vigour. I wanted to break their bones so that they couldn’t move and I could get her back to safety. I don’t know which one of my blows proved fatal. I left them lying senseless and started running back to the outhouse when I was attacked by Birju’s brother. I remembered him throwing the big stone at my sister’s leg which had injured her and in that anger I hit him many times. Later in the evening I realized that they were dead and nobody knew who did it. I was scared that someone may find out and that would be a big trouble for all of us. So I feigned to be shocked. But, you were quick to notice that.”
“And what did you mean by – One more to go.”
“When I saw my sister die, I had vowed to kill Birju. I never wanted to kill others – and if you ask me – I still want to kill him. Don’t want any other girl to go missing in the jungle.”
“Do you really want to stop other girls falling into such danger?”
She nodded affirmative.
“In that case you shouldn’t be killing Birju.” she looked at him in disbelief, “You should be killing Rana instead. It’s Rana who has hired him to do these dirty jobs. It won’t make any difference to Rana if Birju is dead – he simply will hire someone else in his place. He has the money for them and support of Rajasaab. When you kill Rana, it will be a temporary setback for Rajasaab. He will hire some other Rana to get this dirty work done. So – you got to kill Rajasaab.”
“That’s impossible. He has so much security around him.”
“Now that you realize that this isn’t a good idea of killing petty people for your revenge, the best thing for you to do is go back to the jungle and teach the girls the art of self-defence so that they can take care of themselves.”
She thought hard for a moment. What Sajjan said made sense. Had her sister known these techniques, she would have been alive and it’d have been Birju who would have been gobbled up by that crocodile. “I think what you say is correct.”
“Good. I will arrange you to go back to your tribe and set up a training camp for other girls in the jungle to be trained on self-defence techniques. In the meantime, let me also think how Birju can be punished without you getting involved. And if, I can bring those guys face to face with you – then it’s your call – it will be you and your destiny – I will not intervene.”
