Story begins a couple of years or so ago…

‘Param Shikshan Mandal’ owned a huge educational complex. The complex housed many streams of education which included the regular arts, commerce and science streams as well other vocational streams like engineering, catering, law, etc.

It was an electrifying colourful environment for anyone who entered the campus and was well designed with inbuilt auditorium, botanical gardens, well planned designer lawns, fabulous library, enormous parking lots and towering departmental buildings.

In simple words, it was a student’s paradise that was located in wonderful nature just around outskirts of Mumbai. It was funded by government and industries around alike and Mr Patel, the Owner of PDS group was the person who donated the most…

He was a nice guy and his funding to the institute came from his desire to help the children of people working in his five huge factories located in the vicinity around the complex.

All in all the campus was a dream campus for any student and professionally managed.

Priti had studied her school and juniors in Mumbai and was angry on her father that despite her pleading, her father had secured her admission in this village campus called “Param Shikshan Mandal”.

She had thrown all possible tantrums to get back to her college and her friends in Mumbai – all to the deaf ears of her father. She finally opted to try this college for a year left without a choice by her father…

It was her first day in this campus. She drove her car through the high arched gate – she was not aware of what lay ahead in her future…

She stopped at the gate and the security guard stepped out and waived to her. “What” she said, “Oops! Sorry I forgot…” she flashed her id card in style and said “new admission…”

“Thank you, Miss” said security stepping back “seventh crossroad to your right is Department of Botany, and the speed limit is 30 kmph within the Campus”

“Thank you” she said and drove on. Her speed slowed to 20 kmph as she drove through the campus. “Wow!” she said to herself. She had never imagined such a beautiful campus. “Village Campus” she said & laughed. The drive to her department was more than a kilometre inside & she felt comfortable at with the architectural structures looming around her.

At seventh crossway she looked to the right & found the words ‘Botany written in a large font. As she turned into driveway to parking she halted. Her way was blocked by a scooter. A dainty chick was kicking hard at it trying to get it started…

After a few minutes of patient wait Priti honked and the dainty chick sprang up in in fear and almost stumbled on her scooter.

“Sorry” Priti shouted through the window pane. The dainty chick smiled a smile of self-pity and hastily dragged her scooter out of the way.

Priti parked in the parking lot, she saw the dainty chick struggling to get the scooter on its stand. Priti smiled and said “Here, let me try” and quickly put the scooter on its stand.

“Oh! Thank you. Thank you very much.” said the dainty chick taking off her helmet. Priti could see a cute, baby faced girl, “Hi! I’m Payal” she said sticking out her small hand, “Sorry” she blushed and took gloves off her hand “Hi!”

Priti looked at her for a moment and shook hers … girls have strange feminine instincts and Priti’s instinct told her that Payal was going to be her best friend there on…

“I’m Priti, new admission to Botany”

“Oh! How nice! Welcome to Ghaas Phoos club” said Payal & burst out in cheerful laughter.

They walked on to the department. Payal was all bubbly about everything in the campus. Priti heaved a sigh of relief as she came to know that Payal was in the same class. At least she now felt comfortable…

Few hours passed by as the introductory lectures for the new academic year commenced boring every student, each one waiting for the break which seemed to be a long, long time. Finally the bell rang and before the professor could understand that he looked at an empty classroom.

“Priti… Let’s go to the main canteen. I’ll introduce my friends to you.”

“Ok” said Priti. They walked a sizeable distance before the main canteen loomed up. It was a nice walk through a well maintained botanical garden. They entered a noisy canteen and there was a sudden hush.

This was not new to Priti. She knew that she was beautiful and was accustomed to such situations where people could just adore her looks…

All eyes turned toward the pair that had entered. The boys had their eyes glued to the sight that walked in with Payal.

She was the most amazing girl they had seen. She was fair. She had silky long hair that fell over her queenly shoulders onto her lower back. Her figure was near to perfection. She was wearing a tight pink top on her spotless white quarters. After a moment a huge sigh echoed across the canteen & the buzz started again…

Payal deftly moved over to a corner where two or three tables lay vacant. She grabbed a seat and beckoned Priti over. “What would you like to taste?” Payal asked Priti…

“I’ll like to taste you baby” a voice echoed from the back.

“Oh! Hi Chaps!” Payal said excitedly. She got up and hugged the boy.

“Hey Chaps! Meet my new friend, Priti and Priti, meet my boyfriend Chaps – to be my husband” Chaps looked at Priti & said “my dear Payal, you got a competition for yourself … Ouch” was his next exclamation as Payal elbowed him strong.

“Don’t you dare, honey” she said batting her eyelids in mock coquetry.

“Hi… Priti!” Chaps said generously, “Just kidding, me and Payal are engaged & would be marrying as soon as we graduate…”

Priti smiled and said “Well, aren’t good friends of girls supposed to flirt to tease wannabe fiancée?

“There you go. Payal, I’m sure she fits the bill. She can be now an integral part of our group. She gave a deserving answer… anyways here comes the rest of the gang. He’s Amit. She’s Natasha and of course, do meet the evergreen lover boy ‘Deb'”

“Let me tell you, he falls in love with every girl in the college” Amit elbowed Deb

“But, then those girls fall in love with someone else” said Payal & laughed as Priti pondered for a moment. Her busy thoughts were comparing her friends in Mumbai. ‘Not Bad! They are all the same’ she said to herself. She was now comfortable. She had a wonderful college and a vibrant group of friends…

“It’s our group’s tradition. The new joiner always treats the group on the first day of inclusion – no limits treat” said Amit winking to Chaps

“You ready for the test, Priti?” asked Deb.

“Be careful Priti, you don’t know these gluttons, they can finish off all the food in this canteen within minutes and so would be wallet all finished” Natasha cautioned and her eyes twinkled in mischief.

“I’ll pay” said Priti, “but after you finish and there’s still money left in my wallet, all you gluttons would jog in this hot afternoon and circle the entire campus, deal?”

“DEAL” echoed the group.

Next hour the entire group hogged everything they could in fact; Amit and Deb did an extra round to ensure an empty wallet of Priti. They looked expectedly for Priti to faint after she looks at the bill for payment which they knew would be huge.

The bill came dancing in front of everyone’s eyes. Each of them saw the value, rolled their eyes and approved, it was fantastic.

Finally Chaps took the bill in his hand managed to get a plate and presented it to Priti on an imaginary platter.

Priti saw the bill and rolled her eyes. The group burst into an uncontrollable laughter. Priti looked at the bill and slowly got her handbag on the table looking tense. Her hands trembled as she opened it.

“Don’t say I didn’t warn you” Natasha echoed her caution.

Priti slowly peeped in her handbag and took out a wad of notes counted them slowly. She put most of that bundle back in her handbag – she was left with more money in her purse than she paid for the bill.

‘God! She’s filthy rich’ thought the entire group

Priti looked at the group and burst into uncontrollable laughter that sounded like sweet chimes.

Payal asked, “What happened?” and the truth sank on the group.

“Oh! NO! We are supposed to jog the entire perimeter of this campus. It is about 5 kms!!”

“Me and Payal will wait here, how about the deal? I want to see you digesting everything you consumed here… Off you go!”

The group stood up with sullen faces and went off to complete their part of deal…

As they sat in the canteen waiting for others to jog around the campus, Priti typed a SMS ‘Thank you, Dad’

The days started passing by with them getting busier with lectures, practical and other activities. Priti was an integral part of the group and the days seemed to be flying.

Every weekend they used to go on an outing on bikes or in Priti’s car exploring the serene nature around.

Priti in fact had grown more beautiful now that she was away from busy Mumbai & the pollution around. Every day she would smile and thwart off those silly proposals from boys who never stopped admiring her.

‘Deb’ proposed her almost every day, sometimes, seriously. He thought he had a better chance than other boys since Priti belonged to his group.

This was the first weekend in many days that her father was home and she spent time with him happily chatting about her college and new friends…
