“Please talk to me. I want to capture your voice in my heart and listen to it whenever I miss you.”
“I did tell you that things have changed.” he said in a plain tone, “You have had your revenge. You’ll be going back to your campus. I know, I won’t mean anything to you in few months.”
“Why do you say so?” she asked him in tears, “You don’t want to take me along with you. Had you asked me – I would have given you my solemn promise that – no matter what – I will stick by your side, go wherever you go, stay at any place you do. I’m ready to live the way you ask me to. I don’t need any comforts except the warmth of your arms. I will cook your meals, wash your clothes, I just want to be The Good Wife to you.”
“You don’t understand” he finally said looking at her, “Yes. I do agree that you are the only female who I have cared for after a long time. I have grown fond of you – I’m now accustomed to you being around me, accustomed to listening to your adiavsi songs.” he paused as she looked at him with growing expectation. “And – I have fallen in love with you. However, I cannot forget the reality. And the reality is – I’m alive only to complete the Mission I have undertaken. This Mission is going to help millions and millions of people to live in peace and work toward their prosperity. My Mission is going to take me to dangerous places and unknown dangers. People here at Dheemapur are good at heart – so they cooperated. I can’t expect people everywhere to behave in the same manner. They may turn against me. Rajasaab saw the political advantage he would gain out of what I was doing so he didn’t stop me. I don’t think the other political leaders have the same calibre of thought. They may ask their volunteers to kill me and my family – you.” He paused to let his thought process sink in her mind, “Do you think I would like to return one day and find you murdered by someone unknown? What if they kill me and treat you worse than what Rana wanted to treat you? Why risk your life?”
“Why are you talking about death and such horrible thoughts – can’t I learn from you and convince the ladies of those regions where we visit. That will help you finish your tasks sooner.”
“Good idea.” he said enthusiastically. “So let’s think logical and positive. Let’s assume that everyone cooperates and everything goes according to my plan. We will travel to every place together. We marry legally and have children. Would you like your children to roam around like this?”
“I promise – we won’t have children.”
“That’s a different issue – so we agree not have children and we will happily roam around. In about 20/25 odd years, I’ll grow old and may not be in a position to work.”
“I’ll have learned the work from you by then. I’ll do that for you. I’ll be your support.”
“Great! I like your enthusiasm and your promises. Then one day, I’ll die a natural death, nobody escapes that – and I’ll leave you behind in this world – It would be such a stage of your life where you won’t be old to die or young enough to start anew – and Sweetheart, that’s a very difficult life…”
She thought of a counter but couldn’t. Tears kept flowing. He seemed to have won the argument with his simple logic. Next morning, she prepared his morning tea with eyes swollen of all the crying she had done. She had been thinking hard to counter his logical arguments. She couldn’t think any. She sadly looked at him pack his things up.
“Aren’t you going to take your pendant of your GOD along with you?”
“I’m going to wear it. I need its strength. I’ll need it especially, when I leave here with beautiful memories. It’s going to help me remember the Mission I got to achieve. It’s going to render strength to me to leave everything behind and carry on with the Mission.”
She clung to his back, “Please take me along with you.”
He turned around and smiled, “I promise you this – when I have completed all my projects that I have undertaken in this mission – I’ll return to this, very same outhouse at Dheemapur – I’ll play with little Leela and remember every moment we have spent together. If you still persist on spending your life with me then, I’ll be the happiest person in the world. I’ll welcome you with open arms and will spend every balance moments of my life – only with you.”
She happily hugged him, “And I promise that I’ll go back to the jungle after my graduation and teach the adivasi girls the art of self-defence. Once done, I’ll return to Dheemapur, stay here at this outhouse and await your return.”
He put his arms around her and she kissed him with love and affection.
“It’s time for me to leave for Bhama” he said loosening his hug around her, I want you to say a smiling bye to me in front of Amar and Lajjo. – just like the good wife you have been.”
She nodded, her sad emotions returning. He then handed a packet to her. She opened it and looked at all the money it contained.
“Here, this is for you. With Rana who sponsored you on behalf of Rajasaab dead, you have lost your sponsor for your education. This amount will help you in completing your graduation as well help you till you settle down in your life. Don’t say no – it’s just a small token from your loving husband who is leaving you with a promise to return which is full of ifs and buts…”
She kept the packet on the bed and looked at him, expressionless and emotionless as he picked up his duck bag and the suitcase and walked toward the main door of the outhouse. She put a fake smile and waived him a bye along with Amar, Lajjo and little Leela. Once he was out of sight, she ran back and threw herself on the bed weeping inconsolably.
