Their discussion was interrupted by a crackle of the radio. It was an interception from across the border. The radio confirmed that Major Chaitanya was killed by guards while trying to escape.
“Good for him. At least he isn’t alive to hear what happened to his family.” they all stood up in revered silence for this martyr and their hero.
Major Chaitanya made his way, away from his camp to some isolated patch in the mountain and cried his heart out.
Once he had control on his grief, anger seethed within.
‘This is a good opportunity’ he thought, ‘The enemy thinks I’m dead and my own colleagues think I’m a captive on the other side of the border. Nobody knows where I actually am, whether I am dead or alive – let me go back and kill the bastards who did this – nobody will dream that I did it.’
He made his way avoiding various posts and camps to the nearest town. He found an empty house on the outskirt and changed from his uniform to that local person’s dress. He threw his uniform into the fireplace where the fire was burning. From there he made it to the nearest bank and made his way to his hometown. He wanted to search the shady guys who had taken part in that arson. Also he wanted to locate a shady guy who would illegally sell him arms and ammunition he wanted for his revenge. He spent about a week in an off-market lodge trying to find such a guy.
In the meantime, he had ample time to think and he realized that if he killed those miscreants, he might be arrested by local police who then will hand him over to the military police. He then would be tried as a deserter and handed back over to the local police and he would end up spending his life in a jail.
He thought a lot about what he should do, what is the correct way to avenge and stop all this nonsense. He had an option to go back to his regiment informing that he managed to escape and has returned. Nobody knew that he indeed had escaped and was now hiding in his own country. He started gathering information about what really happened and realized that one of the prominent political leaders had fuelled up hate amongst the castes and engineered the riots for his own political advantage.
His studies about these politicians led him further into the facts, narrowing down to few, top order political leaders who resorted to such means of divide by hate and rule. These few top order leaders had been using this technique now for years together and were in no mood to stop. They were thinking of newer rifts to further divide the people of the country. They were the primary root cause of such hate based riots based on race, caste, creed and religion – all over the country.
Killing those miscreants was pointless because these politicians cared two hoots about the lives of their goons. They simply would hire new hands to carry out their sinister plans. They had no value for lives of common people. The country had an entire army to deal with enemies outside the border but nobody to deal with these internal ones.
He had worked with the Intelligence Bureau during his military career and knew ways and means to get the information he needed. He used his experience and his unofficial contacts who thought he still was with the bureau to gain all the information about these dirtiest of political leaders.
He then started working out on a plan to eliminate them one by one – in a way serving his country. He pledged this Mission as The Mission of His Life. He was ready to die for this mission. If he succeeded, at least the people of this country would live in peace. And eliminating the sinister at its roots would deter any other politician to follow the dirty path…
His basic education had been of farming. He had deeply studied about various crops, soil and had a brain to experiment, to grow a better crop using innovative techniques. During the peace time locations, he had mastered the science and robotics which had helped him in developing innovative arms for use by his regiment.
His dream after his retirement from the military services was to own a modest field and experiment with the way the crops were grown and help the farmers of the country to prosper and spend time with his little daughter who he had to leave for his duties toward the country.
He remembered a deputy who had attained martyrdom during one of the skirmishes on the border. He hailed from one of the tribes located in Kerala. There was nobody else in his regiment who belonged there. This was his chance…
He took on a new identity – Sajjan…
He travelled to the tribe of his deputy and informed them that he was there on request of this deputy. He had met him in the mountains of Himalayas when he was roaming up there. He had interacted with that soldier and on his request had travelled all the way to help the tribes grow a good crop enough for them to meet their needs. Fortunately for him, the tribes were convinced of his story and welcomed him to stay with them.
He spent time there, then in the jungles of Madhumalai, trying out his experimental methods to develop good harvests and it really helped those tribes prosper. Rajasaab was the first on his list. His family had been burnt alive due to the hate created by Rajasaab. He had secretly visited Dheemapur and studied the local conditions there and had zeroed in on Amar. He knew that Amar was the key that would open up the door leading him to Rajasaab. He knew that Amar was going to attend a farmer’s meet. He made Amar think that his meeting with Sajjan was accidental. He knew that Amar respected knowledge and experience. He would invite him to Dheemapur and introduce him to people in a different light which would allow him to work on his plan.
He had planned and re-planned his mission to kill Rajasaab and not get caught. If possible, get some illegal money from him which can be used to kill others of those dirty influential politicians on his hit list.
He knew that Rajasaab had spread the word around that he was on hit list of terrorists and had secured government security. This had made a direct attack on him almost impossible. He had to approach him to get near and in a way that nobody will have any doubt – least of all Rajasaab.
If he succeeded in killing Rajasaab – the terrorists would be blamed…
