Alisha had no other feeling at that moment. She just had a want of running away from her pain. It was horrible. She was in a plight of a musk deer… the musk deer smells of its own intoxicating musk fragrance & keeps running in a hope to find the musk little realizing that the musk is within… so was now Alisha running away from all that pain little realizing the pain was within…
Her car sped dangerously out of Chaits’ building & she almost toppled over with screeching noise of tyres… as she took a sharp turn. It was almost a block away when she realized… she was going the wrong way… she made a hasty U-Turn and switched on the wipers of her car. As she pulled up in the parking of her building she realized – it was a clear day & there was no water on the windscreen… they were tears in her eyes that overflowed…
She opened the door to her apartment and realized the emptiness within … again…she was alone… secluded within the silent walls of her apartment… Yet again, the empty walls in her apartment heard her cries of her agony… she poured a drink & gulped it like a glass of water… it didn’t make any difference to how lonely she felt in that empty apartment. She entered her bedroom & let out a huge cry & fell down on her bed… desperately hugging her pillow for comfort & cried her heart out… the walls in the apartment simply echoed her wails… She cried & cried & kept on weeping till she was utterly exhausted & slept a very uncomfortable sleep…
It was late in the afternoon when her eyes opened… her body was aching but she smiled as she remembered Chaits holding her & lustily kissing her & she melting in his kisses & touches… soon she came around to some sense & looked around her & realized she was in her apartment – alone!
Slowly, the pain she felt in the morning after hearing about Priti from Chaits started seeping in… She felt gloomy…
She woke up… her mind was blank… mechanically she freshened up and brewed coffee… a tear ran across her cheek as she remembered the time when she brewed coffee for Chaits – the first time.
She sat comfortably at the corner of Indian sitting in her hall – gloomily sipping at her coffee when she heard the doorbell ring out loudly – breaking the silence in that apartment…
Alisha wasn’t expecting anyone at that time & opened the door wondering who it might be suddenly her face lit up as she saw Chaits standing at her door smiling sheepishly. She asked him to come in & offered a cup of coffee which he accepted graciously.
Alisha was not sure – why is Chaits was at her apartment… ‘What does he want now that he’s broken my heart?’
“Hi! Chaits! So tell me what brings you here?” Chaits could sense bitterness in her a tone & thought it was perfectly normal reaction.
“I came here because I want to talk to you – especially whatever happened this morning… I’m sorry, I got drunk – I shouldn’t have behaved the way I did!”
“Chaits… Have you come here to hurt me more?” Alisha asked him sternly.
“No! I’ve come here to share my feelings with my best friend” said Chaits.
Alisha was taken aback by his answer was he speaking truth or was be trying to console her?
Alisha looked directly in his eyes… and she saw & felt his expression to be genuine…
“I’d love to be your best friend, Chaits, but…” Alisha paused here…..
“But; what, Alisha?”
“For that you need or rather I’d say we now need Priti’s consent to it…. Does she know that you’d a crush on me before you actually proposed her? Does she know that you met me & now we keep on meeting here at Delhi? Does she know that what I feel for you? Does she know what happened today? And, knowing all this, do you think she’ll consent to… your friendship even… I am a girl & I know, wouldn’t trust the other girl even if I trust you…” Alisha was firing her rounds quite determined to be sure…
Chaits put a hand on his face and started laughing which irritated Alisha even more “What’s so funny?”
Still laughing Chaits said… “Till date, I thought only your features meet… however… now I see – even you think similar… that’s exactly what Pinky said before I told her that it wasn’t someone else – but that I loved her…”
“See – that’s natural for every girl whether it’s me or Priti or for that matter anyone else…” Alisha retorted. She didn’t like Chaits comparing her & Priti.
“Ok Okay Ms Alisha Fire – please cool it… I don’t remember when you left to me alone in my apartment… I dozed off on the sofa in the position I was sitting. Around noon I woke up & realized what happened… I must have hurt you badly because you left without closing the door” said Chaits ruefully & Alisha bit her lip now realizing she actually hadn’t bothered to close the door as she ran out of his apartment.
“I was at first confused and then felt sad at the thought of losing you both – one my love – two my best friend… Then I made up my mind & called Pinky & told her everything that happened from yesterday… she knows we are good friends… in fact I’d told her about our first meeting at Dhaba as soon as I reached home the same day. As you rightly said Pinky was shocked at what happened & hanged up on me… I tried calling her the whole morning – but she didn’t answer any of my calls… I was sad & thought of calling you to tell you what Pinky was doing to me – but then I thought – I rather not – I’d to first speak to Pinky… I tried & tried till the battery of my mobile went down… I didn’t know what to do – I decided to email her… I opened my inbox later – I found 2 emails waiting for me the first one from Jeetesh to inform me that our trip had to been postponed – he had been trying to call me… and the second one was from Pinky…”
Alisha was now interested in what Priti had written in that mail… “So what did Priti write?” and felt a concern as for the first time she saw Chaits’ eyes moist. In reply Chaits handed her the printout of that email…
“Are you sure you want me to read that personal mail?”
Chaits nodded but said nothing. Alisha’s hands trembled as she opened the folded sheets of paper…
‘Hi! Chaits!’ Alisha started reading further “I’m sorry I didn’t answer your calls after I hung up on you. I hope, you understand that it was a natural reaction – if you’re not sure, please ask Alisha & I’m sure she’d have reacted the same way I did… I was frustrated when you told me that you held & kissed Alisha… I’m here trying hard to finish my college dreaming all day all night about our wedding and you’re away thousands of miles meeting & kissing your first crush… I’ve seen the intensity of your passion & infatuation for Alisha when we first met.
But then knowing you & knowing how honest & good hearted you are… I was afraid of losing you to her… then I pondered over Alisha’s past that you related & felt sad for her.
I know you, Chaits and I know you well… if you’d any dishonest intention – you’d never had called me & told me what happened & neither would you’ve told Alisha about me… I trust you Chaits. And I know exactly how Alisha must be feeling. I tried calling you back once my mind was at rest but your phone was switched off!
I know, it’s going to be difficult. But, Chaits! I want you to at visit Alisha & let her know that she’s still your best friend.
Put yourself in her shoes – Think about it.
If on the New Year’s Eve, had I told you that I loved someone else, what would have been your plight? And, if after that, I had stopped contacting you – what would’ve been the meaning of our friendship. And if you can’t openly share & accept your best friend’s feelings – You aren’t friends at all…
To be best friend means… you understand what your friend feels & act honestly and let him or her know the truth so that each accepts the fact & the bond of friendship grows stronger…”
Alisha was moved by Priti’s thought… she continued reading, ‘I don’t know why your phone is switched off – I’m worried about you – please take care of yourself and call me back as soon as possible… I wanted to discuss this with you – so I’m mailing this to you… I trust you Chaits & I’ve no issues if Alisha is your best friend – because I know you’d never call anyone ‘A Best Friend’ unless you feel he or she really is…
At the same time – please do remember that your Pinky is alone here – weaving dreams of our forthcoming wedding.
And yes, please say ‘Hi’ to Alisha on my behalf… Love You – Priti (Pinky)”
Alisha had tears in her eyes – she got up & took the empty cup from Chaits & went into her kitchen…“Chaits! You’re lucky to have won love of Priti…. she’s thoughtful and a noble girl who trusts you… I think I got to learn many things from her…You really are lucky… If I’d have been in her place – I’d have broken our relation – then & there… maybe I may’ve repented for my reaction later… that must be the difference in the exposure we had… I’ve learnt to live with those lusty looks as I grew up and didn’t meet you to know that people like you still exist… I need to learn how to trust from Priti” said Alisha as she washed the cups & walked back into the hall… Chaits was now standing as if he was ready to go…
“Alisha! Can I ask you a question?”
“What?”
“Friends?” Asked Chaits & smiled
“How dare you ask me that question?” Alisha asked rather angrily to a baffled Chaits & continued, “Especially when you know that you’re asking this question to a person who already is… your best friend?” and she laughed as she saw a visible relief in Chaits’ expression.
“Ok… so let me make amends to the confusion that created a small storm in our best friendship by giving you a treat…… so where’d you like me go to treat you?” asked Chaits
“At the same dhaba where we first met” Alisha was quick to answer.
“I’ll definitely… but… “Alisha look quizzed as Chaits continued, “I’d feel proud to escort the Famous… Alisha Fire” Alisha looked even more confused “What do you mean, Chaits?”
“I see a tired face with swollen eyes and my Alisha is famous for her looks – so – why don’t you turn glamorous?”
“You” said Alisha in smock anger & chased him, finally hugging him, careful to kiss him on his cheeks even though she felt like kissing him on lips…
They had a wonderful evening that they spent together at the Dhaba… They returned past midnight & Chaits got out of her car & she got off & walked around to take the wheel…
“Thank you, Chaits, for a lovely evening… I may’ve lost my love… but I still have my best friend with me” and she hugged Chaits… and she didn’t realize, she unknowingly kissed him again – on his lips & felt good… But, then, she remembered Priti & hastily withdrew, said bye to Chaits & sped off to her home….
A week passed by and Chaits could see that she was working toward curbing her feelings of love for him…
