Next day, Sajjan gave an option to Amar. He could finish his work in the fields and complete his other pending deals and not accompany him.
Amar was too fascinated with working style of Sajjan and he was learning a lot from the way he worked, the way he spoke, the way he convinced people. He also was trying to learn how to read the soil. He decided to put off his work for another day. He wanted to learn…
“Okay, then…” Sajjan said with a sly smile, “Brace up for a tedious and a tiring day ahead. Lots of legwork will be required, that too up and down few hills.”
“Please do take him along with you, Sajjanbahi.” Lajjo said with a tongue in cheek tone, “I want to know if my husband really has the stamina that he boasts.” she started laughing looking at Amar’s face which turned red at this provocation. This made his will even stronger to accompany Sajjan that day.
“Don’t be too late.” Leela said and blushed at teasing raise of eyebrows by Lajjo and ran back to outhouse. Sajjan looked at vanishing Leela and then at Lajjo…
“Girls talk.” Lajjo said and vanished into the house laughing.
“Whatever…” both Sajjan and Amar mumbled in unison and walked out of the main gate. Leela was at the door watching Sajjan go out to work.
It was evening. Leela and Lajjo were sitting in the veranda of Amar’s house when they saw a tonga stop at the main gate. Sajjan got off and paid for the fare. Then they saw him help Amar get off it. They both walked in, Sajjan lending Amar the support of his shoulder. Amar was limping badly while Sajjan too had an awkward walk. Lajjo and Leela looked at each other for a moment and rushed to them. With some difficulty, they managed to sit Amar in the chair laid out in the veranda.
“Lajjo”, Sajjan said a bit in pain himself, “Please take care of your husband. He needs a good massage using sesame oil. I hope he has no broken bones.” He laughed looking at the state of Amar who was in pain and stopped suddenly grimacing as his own body ached, “sometimes, even the laughter is painful.” he reflected…
“Why – what – “ Lajjo was dumbfounded.
“Please leave your questions for some other time”, Sajjan pleaded in pain and turned a bit awkwardly. Leela gave him a supportive shoulder as they walked to the outhouse.
“What happened?” she asked even as they heard a loud OUCH from Amar.
“Later.” Sajjan said and once inside, he sat on his favourite armchair. He tried making few stretching moves to relax his painful muscles. His expressions showed extreme pain.
Leela wanted to know what had happened but stopped short of asking and let him sit the way he felt comfortable. She rushed into the kitchen and served the meal. Rather than waiting for him to finish first, she gave him a silent company. Then she helped Sajjan walk to the bedroom and helped him lie down on the bed.
She rushed to the kitchen again as Sajjan lay down trying to control the physical pain. She came back with heated sesame oil and a heated brick.
“Turn around.” she almost ordered Sajjan.
“What are you trying to do?”
“First, I’m going to put this heated brick and slowly move it around your back to ease off the pain.”
“Oh! Don’t bother. I’m used to sleeping over such pains. A night of good rest will see me okay by tomorrow,”
“I’m also going to apply the oil so that your wounds heal and you get relieved of the pain.” she said pushing him hard from one side so that he toppled over and lay flat on his stomach. She touched the edge of his shirt and was about to roll it upward.
“Don’t touch my shirt.” he said curtly.
“Okay” she said smiling, “I’ll put the heated brick over your shirt without touching it. This will give you some quick relief. The heat will make you feel relaxed.”
She carefully touched various parts of his back which she felt were aching and then gently moved the brick around those giving his back a heat massage. This really worked and he started feeling better.
“How are you feeling now?” she smiled at him looking at his relaxed expressions.
“Thank you.” he smiled and held out a hand to her.
“If only you allow me to apply the heated oil…”
“It’s okay. I told you I’m used to sleep over such petty pains. They get cured by themselves.”
“Now at least, will you tell me what happened?”
“Ah! Nothing much, I wanted to see the terrains in a bird’s eye view. So we climbed up and down 3 hills starting from Bhama and slipped on the fourth…”
