He reached the outhouse and found the main door open. He could hear Leela working in the kitchen. He peeped in and greeted her. Then he sat on his working table, working on the maps of what he had learnt from his visits to the hills. He was lost in deep thought and was planning hard at what he wanted to do. He absentmindedly ate his meal and continued working on the maps and the plan he was trying to make a workable one. He didn’t realize how much time had passed in this planning of his. He suddenly smelled something different and it was refreshing. He recognized the smell – it was of the jasmine flowers. Soft hands of Leela touched him on his shoulders.

“Don’t move” she said, “just stand up and don’t move…” he conceded to this command of hers and stood up wondering what kind of mischief was in her mind. He again felt the soft touch of her hands on his shoulders and a layer of warmth on his back. “Perfect.” she said, “Now, you can sit.”

“What was all this about?” he asked curious.

She slowly brought her hands from behind him, over his head and unfurled a sweater in front of him.

“Do you like it?” she asked excitedly.

“Wow!” he exclaimed feeling the warmth and the softness of the sweater, “Leela, I gave you some money so that you can buy grocery items as and when you run out of them. Why did you use it to buy such a costly sweater for me?”

“I didn’t buy it,” she said in a proud voice, “I knitted it for you.”

“Wow! – It’s really nice, soft and warm.”

“So – do you like it?”

“Yes. I do.” he waived a hand to her asking her to sit next to him. She stood there, behind his back, watching him happily as his fingers ran over the sweater admiring her fantastic knit work, well decorated in different colours, “I got to reward you for this fantastic sweater”, he said still admiring the sweater, “What should I reward you with?”

“I’ll let you know that in due time.” she chirped happily, “and if you have finished your paperwork, let’s go for a walk.”

“Okay” he said and even before he could look away from the sweater, she was at the back door of the outhouse in a flash. He entered the backyard and couldn’t see her. ‘Pssst…’ she called form the edge of the field. He saw her faintly from where he stood and he walked toward the field. Even as he reached the bank of the field, she disappeared into the field. “You walk on the bank of the field whilst I feel these crops.” she laughed in a naughty tone. He smiled at her youthfulness and the mischief of playing hide n seeks. He started to walk along the bank toward the machan. She kept walking along and humming her tunes about 5ft inside the field, away from his sight.

There was a mischievous silence as he approached the machan. He looked around trying to hear sound which will give her position away. “Pssst…” she called again. She already was on the machan. He climbed it up, his curiosity rising as to what mischief she had planned for him. He saw her sitting in the corner of the machan, her dupatta covering her – head to toe.

“What’s this now?” he asked amused.

“I’m feeling shy.” she said softly.

“C’mon.” he said teasingly, “What’s making you feel shy?”

“It’s something, Lajjo di asked me to do – and I did it – but I’m shy to let you know.” her voice was now more soft and shy.

“Okay…” he said softly, “Let me have a look.” he faintly had guessed that this could be about a drastic change in her look.

“Promise me that you won’t laugh.”

“I promise, I won’t – so –now let me take a look.”

“No.” she now was extremely shy as he sat in front of her. In the moon light, he could see her tremble with excitement as well with varied emotions she seemed to be struggling with. She also seemed to be worried about how he would react. He slowly lifted the edge of her duppata near her feet and her shivering grew in anticipation and excitement. He couldn’t believe his eyes as he uncovered her face removing the dupatta and keeping it beside them. She sat there shivering and blushing, not ready to meet her eyes with those of Sajjan.
