“What happened?” she asked in despair looking at lost looks of Sajjan even as entire sequence of them meeting for the first time on the train played back in his mind.
“Didn’t you like this change?” she asked her voice going lower in despair.
He looked at her again, from top to her toe, his awe on the increase. She looked like a heavenly flower which could lose its charm, grace and beauty, if touched by a human. He resisted his urge to touch her and say any soft word of any appreciation. He now knew why the group of wolves had chased her and wanted her to compromise her chastity and plunder and loot the treasure of beauty she possessed.
Further, he had to achieve his goal. The moment of his final deliverance was fixed and the time was running out. Once he was done and finished with the project & he had accomplished his mission here. He had to leave without her for the next stage of his mission. He said nothing. His heart was beating faster with every glance he threw at her. He was finding it tough to control his urge and his manly feelings rising for her. He abruptly got up and climbed down the machan with utterly confused Leela following him.
They reached the outhouse without a word. He entered the bathroom and poured a bucket full of cold water over himself to cool down the rising heat in his body. He changed into fresh and dry clothes and entered the bedroom. Leela was sitting there on the bed looking confused and dejected.
She looked at him enter, “Am I looking so horrible that you cannot even bear to look at me or say anything?” she asked him with tears ready to overflow.
“It’s not that Leela”, he said in a cool and calculated tone but found it difficult to keep it that way – his voice turned soft and genuine as he appreciated her, “You are looking fabulously beautiful. I never had an idea that you are so beautiful. The way, you had been camouflaging your attractive looks under your adivasi dressing and behaviour. This is the first time I realized how beautiful you really are, how thick, long and shiny is your hair. Your pretty face and your slim body are irresistibly attractive. For a moment, my heart flipped and my morals went for a toss. I felt like taking you in my arms and doing all those immoral things, which, I have promised to you that I won’t.” he sighed and looked away from her, still trying to control his urge and his rising manly emotions. “I do not want to go back on my solemn words of promise I gave you”, he said his back still towards her, “also, I got to finish my project here On Time.”
He stopped short of completing what he wanted to – she got up from the bed and was now standing behind him – her arms in a tight hug around his chest. “I understand”, she said in a quavering voice which reflected her dejection at his words of rejection. At the same time she was desperate that he accepts her newly found feelings for him. “I know you have kept your word and you still want to keep your word. The word of promise was given by an unknown man to an unknown girl – but, the times have changed – I now want to entrust myself to you – completely.”
“Look at me.” he said, finally in control of himself, as he turned around and looked at her – directly in her wide eyes, “I can understand the change of feelings in you for me. Look at the reality. I’m about twice your age. I keep roaming around in remote and dangerous places in this country to achieve my personal goals. Once my mission here is complete, I will not stay here for even a single moment. I’m planning to entrust you to Amar and Lajjo to look after you and help you settle you down in your life. In about 15 days – we will be total strangers. I can’t give you false promises that we would be together for a long time. I understand that I allowed people here to think that we are married. This was because we are here in a small traditional village which is broken down by dirty politics of divide and rule. These people won’t understand humanity and would have raised objection about us staying together here. Had it been a big city, it wouldn’t have been an issue. So I’m trying to control every emotion.”
She looked at him, his words bringing the tears on the verge of flowing out. Her mind told her that he was speaking true, sensible and reasonable. She knew that he really cared for her. Her heart simply didn’t want to follow her mind. “15 days is a long time.” she finally managed to murmur out, “and I know, I’m never going to forget you. Never going to forget how good a person you are. Never going to forget all the good you’ve done for me.”
She wiped off a tear which surfaced in the corner of her eyes and looked at him – straight in his eyes. “You are going to leave me with so many good memories – I just want a few more – I want memories of our love story – a story that is different from all others – it will help me to smile throughout my life – please do not say NO.” she pleaded and begged of him and then on an impulse, she suddenly put her arms around him and gently kissed him. Then she followed with more gentle and loving kisses till he yielded and put his arms around her. The passion then took over and they drowned themselves in each other’s arms experiencing deep moments of love and lust… her happiness knew no bounds as his hands delicately explored her curves and she loved the lustful look in his eyes. She submitted to his way of love making…
He woke up in the morning to smell the chulha and her gentle humming inside the kitchen. He freshened up with a feeling of remorse about him losing his self-control the previous night. He sat on the armchair, deep in melancholic thoughts of remorse. She offered him the mug of his morning tea gently pecking his cheek in happiness.
“Leela,” he started in an apologetic tone but was silenced, her finger on his lips.
“Don’t you forget – I’m your wife.” she smiled…
“Deva, any more information on this saint called Sajjan?” Rajasaab asked.
“No. Sir, all the information we have on him seems to be true. He indeed has done a lot of fabulous work in those areas and the people there have started to actually prosper using his methods. Only GOD knows how a saint like him is born in modern times of deceit.” he looked at Rajasaab, “I can feel the growing unity amongst the people of Dheemapur region. It has taken us years of hard work and diverse methods to put that feeling of deep hatred in people’s mind – then, this saint comes along and unites them in about two months – this is dangerous. I think the best way is to eliminate him.”
“No. Deva”, Rajasaab said thoughtfully, “eliminating him will further unite people here and he’ll become a GOD to them. People will turn against us and that’s a chance we can’t risk. I’ve been thinking and your words ring a different kind of bell in my mind – I’ll like to meet him personally to know who he is and what his true plan is – Nobody’s a saint these days. Be sure to send a message to him – however – through someone people don’t relate to us or our political party… Also have someone to go and disturb this newly found unity…”
“Yes Sir.” Deva thought for a moment, “I’ll get this done through Rana and his goons.” he left a thoughtful Rajasaab to carry out this evil plan.
Finishing a meet with a group of farmers, Sajjan started walking back to the main road to board a bus to his next meet when he was joined by a tough looking man.
“Hello… Mr. Sajjan?” he called out.
“Yes.” Sajjan said. Something about this guy put his mind on alert. He very well had an idea that his work of uniting people was creating troubled minds in various political parties, especially, Rajasaab’s party. He knew that they would be immensely concerned about the way he was uniting people and erasing the feeling of hate from their mind. His reading of Rajasaab was that of a political intellectual and a shrewd planner. However, someone down his line could get impulsive and belligerent.
“I got a message for you. Rajasaab wants to meet you personally. He has invited you to his farmhouse day after tomorrow at 4pm. Please be sure to reach the bridge near Rajapuri on time. A vehicle will be arranged for you.”
Sajjan nodded his approval and the tough guy disappeared in the crops nearby.
